Extracurricular Activities

What are extracurricular activities? Essentially, they encompass everything you do outside the classroom. Your list of activities can enhance your college application and help you stand out among other applicants. When selecting activities, prioritize quality over quantity. It’s more valuable to engage in 2-3 pursuits that genuinely interest you, where you can showcase your initiative and leadership, rather than simply signing up for many just to fill a space.

Students typically choose from three types of activities:

Academic or Career-oriented activities: Joining a debate club, participating in Science Olympiad, or being part of a math team reflects your interest in a specific field and highlights your intellectual curiosity.

Community-oriented activities: Volunteering at an animal shelter or starting a STEM club for underprivileged kids demonstrates your concern for the world and your desire to make a positive impact.

Personal activities: Writing a novel, starting a book club, or training for a marathon helps to paint a fuller picture of who you are.

How to find extracurricular activities?

  • Your own school: Check your school’s clubs, sports teams, and events. This is the best and easiest place to join an established organization or start a new one.
  • Libraries: Many libraries offer workshops, reading groups, and activities for all ages.
  • Colleges and Universities: Many colleges have educational programs for high school students; they often have outreach programs or events open to high school students.
  • Nonprofits and Volunteer Groups: Many organizations are looking for volunteers, providing opportunities to engage with the community while developing new skills.
  • Career-specific Organizations: Groups like FBLA and DECA often host competitions and essay contests that you can join individually or by forming a team with your peers.
